Get to know the artist

Gilles Peterson approaches DJing through record collecting, broadcasting and musical discovery. His background in South London's pirate radio and rare jazz, soul and Latin records grew into work with Acid Jazz, Talkin' Loud and Brownswood Recordings. Following his selections opens paths across scenes as well as genres.

Beyond a genre tag

Founded in 2006, Brownswood connects jazz, soul, hip-hop and bass music. Alongside individual artists, the label has assembled projects exploring music from London, Havana, Johannesburg, Melbourne and Brazil.

Start exploring

Try the September 2024 Brownswood Basement recording with Lynda Dawn and Richard Spaven for a radio introduction, then explore Brownswood's artist catalogue. Mala in Cuba is another historical entry point, connecting the Havana Cultura project with electronic music. These are selections and projects he helped bring to listeners, rather than solely his own productions.
